Introducing – New Western Alliance Heavy Tanks

April 4, 2022

Three new heavy tanks join the Western Alliance Tech Tree!

Starting April 5th, add more muscle to your Cold War matches with the new heavy tank line in the Western Alliance Tech Tree!

This short line of three tanks branches off from the M46A1 Patton medium tank; it then merges back into the medium tank line at the M60A1. It features the first Tech Tree heavy tanks for the Post-War Era, so get ready to make your stand in Era 1!

Each of these tanks pairs a powerful 120mm gun with an elevated hit point pool that’s higher than the hit points you’ll find on other tanks at the same level. As you progress through this branch, the gun’s accuracy, reload, and penetration will continue to increase.

What’s more, these three new tanks are ideal to deploy in the two-week Lead by Example Challenge that begins on April 5th (information to come in the April 5th WoT’s Happening This Week!). Put their damage-dealing capabilities to good use as you earn rewards!

T34 Heavy

  • Class: Heavy
  • Era: Post-War
  • Unlocked by: M46A1 Patton
  • Unlock requirement: 114,200 XP
  • Purchase cost: 3,460,000 Silver
  • Unlocks the M103A1
  • Note: If you Elite the M46A1 Patton before this branch is added, it will automatically be available for purchase upon release.

The appearance of updated German tanks such as the Tiger II during World War II led the U.S. to re-evaluate its heavy tank strategy. Development of the T34 heavy tank started in 1945. The tank was a successor to both the T29 and T30 and featured a 120mm anti-aircraft gun. Ultimately, it was developed too late to enter mass production for wartime use. However, its design along with the design of the later T43 influenced the M103 heavy tank, which the U.S. fielded during the Cold War.

Gameplay Tips:

This vehicle’s turret armor is thicker than its hull armor. That strong turret armor, combined with excellent gun depression and consistent gun stats, makes this tank well suited to hull-down gameplay.

M103A1

  • Class: Heavy
  • Era: Post-War
  • Unlocked by: T34 Heavy
  • Unlock requirement: 137,000 XP
  • Purchase cost: 4,380,000 Silver
  • Unlocks the M103A2

The onset of the Cold War after World War II was marked by efforts from both the United States and the Soviet Union to build up their armaments. The U.S. pursued several new tank designs in the late 1940s, including the T43 heavy tank. The T43 was placed into production in 1952 and, after over 100 modifications were made, eventually was standardized as the 120mm full-combat M103 tank in 1956.

Gameplay Tips:

The M103A1 has strong turret armor, excellent gun depression, and improved gun stats over its predecessor. Compared to the T34 Heavy, the hull armor is thicker and more heavily sloped on the upper portion, which makes it more reliable. Some rounds will still get through, however, and the lower hull is still a weak area that you’ll want to be aware of.

M103A2

  • Class: Heavy
  • Era: Escalation
  • Unlocked by: M103A1
  • Unlock requirement: 148,000 XP
  • Purchase cost: 5,400,000 Silver
  • Merges back into the medium line at the M60A1

While the U.S. Army phased the M103 out of use in the 1960s, the Marine Corps adopted a number of units and fitted them with upgrades. A total of 153 M103 vehicles were updated with the same 750-hp diesel engine used in the M60 main battle tank, which improved their operational speed and range. The converted vehicles received the M103A2 designation and entered service in 1964.

Gameplay Tips:

An upgraded version of the M103A1, the M103A2 will play in the same way but boasts improved armor, firepower, and mobility over its predecessor.
