The First Division – What is the ‘Big Red One’?

The 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army, nicknamed “The Big Red One,” was the first unit to deploy and engage in battle during World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. Established on June 8, 1917, the First Division has taken part in nearly every American war and is the longest continuously-serving division of the US Army. “The First Division Museum’s mission is to present a complete history of the 1st Infantry Division,” said Paul Herbert, Executive Director of the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park. “We owe that to our soldiers and veterans and also to those who visit Cantigny.”
