Leopard Prototype 773

  • Era: Post War
  • Class: Medium Tank

After West Germany joined NATO in 1955, it entered a project with France and later Italy to design a new main battle tank. Among the German manufacturers submitting proposals for the design was Porsche, whose prototype was eventually selected for German use. The Leopard 773 prototype became the predecessor of the Leopard 1 main battle tank. Manufactured by Germany.

Leopard 1 ’66

  • Era: Escalation
  • Class: Medium Tank
  • Purchase Cost: 5,400,000 Silver
  • Unlock requirement: 148,000 XP
  • Unlocked with the Leopard Prototype 773
  • Gives access to the Leopard 1A3

The rearmament of the Bundeswehr in 1955 immediately created the need for a Main Battle Tank (MBT). After purchasing M47 and M48 Pattons from the US, a program to develop a modern, competitive tank was undertaken. After several waves of intensive design competition prototypes, the new vehicle, designated the Leopard, was approved for mass production. The first production models of the Leopard 1 rolled off the production line in 1965. The Leopard 1 featured a British L7A3 105mm gun, overpressure nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection, gun stabilization, and IR illumination night vision. As a testament to the solid design of the Leopard 1, it was exported to Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Turkey, and Greece becoming what many consider to be the standard MBT of Western Europe.

Leopard 1A3

  • Era: Escalation
  • Class: Medium Tank
  • Purchase Cost: 6,320,000 Silver
  • Unlock requirement: 165,000 XP
  • Unlocked with the Leopard 1 ’66
  • Gives access to the Leopard 1A5

The Leopard 1’s reliability, as well as its popularity with West Germany’s allies, kept it in production with numerous updates to maintain its relevance. The Leopard 1A3 variant featured a welded turret with spaced armor. It also incorporated the improvements made to the Leopard 1A1 and 1A2 before it, including enhanced nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection and the 1A2’s night vision equipment.

Leopard 1A5

  • Era: Escalation
  • Class: Medium Tank
  • Purchase Cost: 7,320,000 Silver
  • Unlock requirement: 177,000 XP
  • Unlocked with the Leopard 1A3
  • Gives access to the Leopard 2

The Leopard 1A5 upgrade featured a significant update. This included a new expanded turret, giving the Leopard 1A5 the potential to mount the 120 mm smoothbore cannon from the Leopard 2, along with significantly enhanced fire control systems, the introduction of Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) rounds, a laser rangefinder, and additional armor panels.

The adoption of the Leopard 1A5 standard was made in order to keep the Leopard 1 relevant as the Leopard entered service. The first versions of the Leopard 1A5 conversion were deployed in 1987. Although conversion to the 120 mm never happened, most of the Bundeswehr’s existing Leopard 1s were eventually updated to the Leopard 1A5 specification.

Leopard 2

  • Era: Détente
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Purchase Cost: 8,250,000 Silver
  • Unlock requirement: 190,000 XP
  • Unlocked with the Leopard 1A5
  • Gives access to the Leopard 2A4

Complications in creating a design that could fit the requirements of both the United States and Germany caused the MBT-70/Kampfpanzer 70 project to falter, ultimately being canceled by both countries in 1969.

Using the lessons learned from the program, the Germans pursued a design that specifically met the needs of the Bundeswehr, resulting in the Leopard 2.

Initially, as a legacy from the KPz 70 program, a missile and cannon version were specified, but the final design was narrowed down to a cannon only solution. Both torsion bar and hydropneumatic suspensions were tested, with the torsion bar winning due to manufacturing simplicity. First deliveries of the Leopard 2 began in 1979.

Sporting a 120mm smoothbore gun, a 1250 hp Daimler-Benz engine, composite armor, gun stabilization, a hunter-killer vision system, and advanced fire controls, the Leopard 2 series became a mainstay of NATO forces and saw service by 16 other countries, including countries outside NATO.

Leopard 2A4

  • Era: Détente
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Purchase Cost: 9,170,000 Silver
  • Unlock requirement: 208,000 XP
  • Unlocked with the Leopard 2
  • Gives access to the Leopard 2A5

Following the Bundeswehr’s long tradition of frequent incremental changes and upgrades to its panzer fleet, production of the Leopard 2 evolved into the 2A4 standard.

The Leopard 2A4 featured a new all-digital fire control system, and improved turret armor. All previously built Leopard 2s in the Bundeswehr’s inventory were also updated to the 2A4’s standard. The Leopard 2A4 was the variant with the most numbers built, with over 1800 Leopard 2A4s constructed between 1985 and 1992, with numerous exports (particularly after the end of the cold war and the unification with East Germany).

Leopard 2A5

  • Era: Détente
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Purchase Cost: 10,900,000 Silver
  • Unlock requirement: 220,000 XP
  • Unlocked with the Leopard 2A4
  • End of the branch

Manufacturer Krauss-Maffei submitted its prototype for the 2A5 variant of the Leopard 2 main battle tank in 1990. The Leopard 2A5 was fitted with several significant enhancements, including improved spaced frontal turret armor that created a wedge or arrowhead shape. Other modifications included armor for the side skirts and hull and improved stabilization. Germany received its first Leopard 2A5 units in 1995.
