Development of the Centurion tank line began in 1943. Designed as a “universal tank” to replace existing infantry and cruiser tanks, the Centurion Mk. II entered service in 1947. A total of 100 Centurion Mk. II vehicles were manufactured between 1945 and 1946, before production shifted to upgraded versions that would see battle through the 1980s.

  • Affiliation: Western Alliance
  • Unlocked with the A41A Centurion Mk. II
  • Gives access to the FV4015 Centurion Mk. 9

Although the Centurion entered service in 1947, it quickly rose to prominence as the main battle tank for the British Army, remaining in production in various forms throughout the 1960s. The Centurion Mk. 5/1 was well equipped with upgraded glacis armor and machine guns to put it in league with the T-55 and M48 Patton vehicles of the time.

FV4015 Centurion Mk. 9

  • Purchase Cost: 5,400,000 Silver
  • Class: Medium Tank
  • Era: Escalation
  • Affiliation: Western Alliance
  • Unlocked with the FV4011 Centurion Mk. 5/1
  • Gives access to the FV214 Conqueror Mk. 1

Throughout its extensive life, the Centurion had, in total, 13 marks and several sub-variants. The Centurion Mk. 9, also known as FV4015, was an improved version of the Mk. 7 fitted with the L7 105mm gun. The Centurion Mk. 9/1 variant further refined the design with the addition of infrared night-sighting equipment.

FV214 Conqueror Mk. 1

  • Purchase Cost: 6,320,000 Silver
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Era: Escalation
  • Affiliation: Western Alliance
  • Unlocked with the FV4015 Centurion Mk. 9
  • Gives access to the Chieftain Mk. 5

The FV214 Conqueror was developed in 1946 as a response to two other categories of vehicles: the German panzer tanks that had demonstrated superior firepower during World War II and the Soviet IS-3 heavy tank that entered service in 1945. The Conqueror’s 120mm gun was considered an advantage, but tank crews generally found the vehicle hard to maneuver. Once the Centurion was outfitted with a 105mm gun, the Conqueror was withdrawn from use in the 1960s.

Chieftain Mk. 5

  • Purchase cost: 7,230,000 Silver
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Era: Escalation
  • Affiliation: Western Alliance
  • Unlocked with the FV214 Conqueror Mk. 1
  • Gives access to the Chieftain Mk. 11

After World War II, the appearance of larger and more powerful Soviet tanks spurred Britain’s development to find a replacement for its Centurion main battle tank. The tank dubbed the Chieftain entered service in 1963. Its excellent armor protection and firepower made it one of the world’s most formidable tanks at the time. Nevertheless, it saw numerous improvements and variants throughout its life. The Chieftain Mk. 6 variant included an improved engine and ranging machine gun.

Chieftain Mk. 11

  • Purchase Cost: 8,250,000 Silver
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Era: Détente
  • Affiliation: Western Alliance
  • Unlocked with the Chieftain Mk. 5
  • Gives access to the Challenger 1

Often considered the first true main battle tank, the Chieftain continued in service and saw numerous updates even after the arrival of its successor, the Challenger 1, in 1980. The Mk. 11 variant was actually an upgrade of the intermediate Mk. 8. Developed in the late 1980s, the Mk. 11 included an improved fire control system (FCS), Stillbrew passive armor, and the Thermal Observation and Gunnery Sight (TOGS) system produced by Barr and Stroud.

Challenger 1

  • Purchase Cost: 9,170,000 Silver
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Era: Détente
  • Affiliation: Western Alliance
  • Unlocked with the Chieftain Mk. 11
  • Gives access to the Challenger 2

The Shir 2 was a variant of the Chieftain main battle tank developed for export to Iran in the 1970s. However, the project was canceled with the end of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and subsequent regime change. At the same time, the UK dissolved its MBT-80 project due to expenses. These factors led the British Army to repurpose the Shir 2 and accept it into service under the Challenger name in 1983. With its 120mm rifled gun and Chobham composite armor, the Challenger served as a notable upgrade to the Chieftain.

Challenger 2

  • Purchase Cost: 10,090,000 Silver
  • Class: Heavy Tank
  • Era: Détente
  • Affiliation: Western Alliance
  • Unlocked with the Challenger 1
  • End of the line. Does not unlock access to additional tanks.

The Challenger 2 is a thorough redesign of the FV4030/4 Challenger 1. Upgrades from its predecessor include uprated Chobham composite armor and a longer cannon barrel. The Challenger 2 entered service in June 1998 and, to this day, continues its role as the main battle tank of the British Army.
