AMX 50 B—it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a medium?!
My name is Jeff Gregg, and I am the Lead Designer of World of Tanks: Valor. Welcome to “Let’s Talk About Tanks!” The goal is to highlight specific tanks, one at a time, and really dig down into what makes them tick, how they are being used, and which approaches may be taken to improve them if necessary.
This article is focused on the AMX 50 B. Let’s get started!
The things that stand out the most is, this tank seems to perform well in terms of win/loss and damage output but has low stats based on its class.
Based on this we plan to do the following:
- Reclassify the AMX 50 B as a medium tank, along with the Tier VIII AMX 50 100 and the Tier IX AMX 50 120.
- It is true this tank was a heavy tank when under development.
- Their stats, performance, and play style lend themselves to the medium class in our game, more so than heavy.
- Also: “The AMX 50, as originally planned, would have been a medium rather than a heavy tank, France being the first of the tank-producing nations to abandon the heavy tank class.”
The above changes will take effect from tomorrow, May 19, after the server restart.
Let’s look at the tank’s win/loss rate compared to skill. In the below picture we see two lines, one that represents the entire population’s win/loss rate and another that represents this tank’s win/loss rate.
The AMX 50 B performs exactly as it should when looked at in terms of skill level. The lines almost completely overlap, meaning this tank neither hurts you nor helps you more than expected based on your skill.
How often does this tank survive a match? On average, the tank survives about 26% of the time, which is low for a Tier X heavy.
How far does this tank move? It is actually one of the most mobile heavy Tier X tanks in the game, but averages right in the middle for all Tier X vehicles.
How much damage does it usually block? Very, very little. It is the worst heavy Tier X in terms of blocking damage in the game. By a lot.
Damage per battle is where this tank shines. While the damage per hit and pen is low (but the latter is higher than the former), we can see the damage per battle is in the upper range for Tier X heavy tanks, doing ~2k damage per battle.
In order to measure the impact of these changes once they are committed, we need at least 5,000 battles in the tank to have enough data. Once we have that amount of info, we will report back here on what the results were and (if necessary) what the next steps will be.
If you have feedback about this process or have further questions, reach out!
See you on the battlefield!
