The American mediums in the M48A5 Patton line get their steel reforged in the latest round of balance changes. Get the details below!
Tanks Reforged is the initiative that overhauls vehicles from World War II mode and brings them in line with today’s battle standards.
This time around, the team takes a closer look at the medium tanks leading to the M48A5 Patton, along with their related Premium tanks. The M48A5 is generally regarded as a well-rounded Tier X vehicle, so how did the devs make sure that the other tanks in the line live up to that stellar reputation?

We generally improved the 76mm guns, as they were greatly underperforming. We also improved the general gun handling of the vehicle and created better “medium” terrain resistance on the stock chassis, which was abnormally high.
We removed the poor stock gun that only had 160mm of penetration. The 90mm M36 becomes the new stock weapon. Additionally, we improved the mantlet armor for the stock turret to help with survivability, as it basically didn’t have any armor before. It should now be able to block some of the lower-tier weapons as you work towards getting the better upgraded turret.
We also removed the 105mm gun due to its inability to perform at this tier as well as the fact that its unlock order was broken, leaving you unable to mount it after unlocking it.
Finally, we improved the reload for the top gun and addressed the abnormally high “soft” terrain resistance value on the stock chassis.
We improved the 90mm gun reloads to make up for the penetration and poor alpha damage.
Again, we also removed the 105mm gun, which simply had no place on a Tier IX vehicle and also had the same issue that prevented you from mounting it after unlocking it.
The top gun did receive a nerf to the reload, as this gun received a substantial ammo buff in Reforged Legends and has been doing too well with its new penetration and shell speed.
Currently, this tank is doing well in all areas across all skill levels, fulfilling the jack-of-all-trades role and leading it to be successful in battle. Due to this, there are no adjustments for this vehicle.
We raised the penetration to the same levels as the Freedom, which also has Preferential Matchmaking. Additionally, we carried over the cupola armor buffs previously made to the Chinese 59-Patton to provide a little more protection for such a large weak spot.
Prior to this round of Tanks Reforged, these tanks had the worst armor power/weight ratio of these Tier VIII U.S. Premiums. Generally, lightly armored tanks instead rely on improved mobility to survive, and because these vehicles were based on the T20 and have the highest top speed for this group of tanks, we’ve greatly improved the engine’s horsepower. This allows each tank to use its speed to survive.
We also improved their ability to shoot on the move with the best accuracy and gun handling. All of these vehicles have also had their penetration updated to reflect the various buffs of the Tech Tree vehicles and be more competitive with the more recently added Premium U.S. mediums, as they had fallen behind the power curve over the years.
These changes will help distinguish these two tanks and give them a “thing” that makes them play differently from the other Premium U.S. medium options. They will be lightly armored but will have the best mobility and gun handling.
These M46 Pattons received the new penetration and shell velocity improvements.
Compared to the M26 Pershing, these Premium tanks received improved reload, giving them the best DPM of the bunch as their “thing.” This allows them to shoot more quickly than the others and balances out having the worst accuracy and aim time.
These tanks are fairly average in firepower and mobility compared to the M26 Pershing. What they do better at is working ridgelines due to having more reliable turret armor, which gives them better survivability than the others.
