New Tech Tree Tanks: Japanese Tank Destroyers

The newest Tech Tree line arrives on April 30! Get ready to take the journey from Tier III to Tier X with eight hard-hitting Japanese tank destroyers.

Since the debut of the Type 5 Ka-Ri in the Tigers Season Pass, we’ve all been waiting eagerly for tank destroyers to be added to the Japanese Tech Tree in World War II.

That moment is finally here, Commander.

Arriving in the game on Tuesday, April 30th, the new line of Japanese tank destroyers starts at Tier III and reaches all the way to Tier X. The Tier III vehicle (the Type 5 Ho-Ru) will be automatically unlocked for all players but will need to be purchased. Given that the Tier III and Tier IV vehicles are exclusive to console, we know these will be on your list of tanks to get!

Additionally, the Tier VIII and Tier IX vehicles will both use the secondary weapon mechanic, giving you multiple ways to leave the enemy reeling.

The most common and battle-tested tank in the Japanese army during World War II was the Chi-Ha medium tank. With almost 2,100 units in existence, it was a logical foundation to use for the development of later armored vehicles. The Ho-Ni I was developed in 1941 by mounting a 75mm Type 90 field gun to the Chi-Ha’s chassis. Twenty-six production units of the Ho-Ni were built in addition to a prototype, and the vehicle saw limited use in engagements in the Philippines and Burma.

At the beginning of 1944, Hitachi Ltd. was tasked with developing a tank destroyer. This small-series vehicle based on the Type 97 Chi-Ha tank was designated the Type 3 Ho‑Ni III. Instead of a rotating turret, a stationary welded cabin was mounted on the ready-made chassis. Its combat weight reached seventeen tons, but this did not affect its mobility. A total of thirty-one vehicles were produced. However, due to end of the war, these tank destroyers never saw combat.

  • Purchase cost: 930,000 Silver
  • Unlocked by the Type 3 Ho-Ni III
  • Unlocks the Chi-To SP

In 1940, Japan started developing designs for a new tank destroyer. For this vehicle, they used a modified chassis of the Type 95 Ro-Go, which never went into production. Due to its large size, high-caliber guns could be placed on the vehicle, and a choice was made in favor of the 105mm Type 92 field gun, which was already being used in the army. Its engine compartment was placed in the front of the hull, and the closed fighting compartment was located in the rear. However, work on the vehicle was discontinued around the beginning of 1943 due to heightened requirements for mobility and armor.

Chi-To SP

  • Class: Tank Destroyer
  • Nation: Japan
  • Tier: VII
  • Research cost: 90,420 XP
  • Purchase cost: 1,470,000 Silver
  • Unlocked by the Type 95 Ji-Ro
  • Unlocks the Ho-Ri II

Designs of this assault tank destroyer used the Chi-To medium tank as a base. The suspension made it possible to mount powerful artillery systems, such as the 10 cm Cannon Type 92 gun, capable of fighting against most vehicles of that time. The gun was mounted in a fully closed fighting compartment with anti-projectile armor, but the basic chassis remained virtually unchanged. Due to the unreliability of the vehicle, as well as the existence of the more promising Chi-Ri suspension, the project was canceled at the drafting stage.

  • Purchase cost: 2,600,000 Silver
  • Unlocked by the Chi-To SP
  • Unlocks the Ho-Ri I

The designs for this experimental Japanese tank destroyer used the Chi-Ri medium tank as a base. By 1945, tank destroyers were being developed with the primary goal of being able to fight enemy vehicles, so there were plans to mount a powerful 105 mm anti-tank gun as the armament for the Ho-Ri II. The vehicle was also supposed to be quite mobile. Due to the fact that work on the Chi-Ri was delayed, engineers did not manage to construct a prototype of the Ho-Ri II before the end of World War II.

In the early 1940s, Japan began working on developing their own tank destroyers. One of these projects was for the Ho-Ri I. The fighting compartment of this vehicle was located in the rear, and the rearranged chassis of the Chi-Ri medium tank was supposed to be used as a suspension. There were also plans to mount an experimental 105mm gun. However, development was discontinued in favor of other projects.
